If you wait until the display lights up, it may be too late. You'll typically want to use the one-time boot menu that's accessed by pressing F Good luck. Yes, I keep pressing F2 right from the start, it always leads to a "SupportAssist" screen displaying the product name, Bios version, Seervice Tag and ePSA, and "No bootable devices found", and it only gives the option to shutdown.

Ok, then if holding down Fn while you press F2 repeatedly doesn't do anything different for you, then I'm not sure what to suggest. Dell has standardized on using the F2 and F12 keys to access the BIOS and one-time boot menu, respectively, for at least the last 15 years, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be working for you.

Maybe try a USB keyboard if you have one available?

However, I don't understand why this issue happened in the first place. Glad you've got a fresh installation, but it doesn't sound like this solved the issue. Based on what you wrote, it sounds like you were unable to even access the BIOS or the one-time boot menu, so the issue isn't really that the system wouldn't reinstall an OS from a bootable USB drive. The issue is that you weren't able to get to the menu that would allow you to tell it to do that.

I got this issue on my XPS 15 but without swapping any hardware on the device. I had to manually hold the power button each time to make it turn off and then boot afterwards, I ran a windows memory diagnostic, that came back with no errors then after a period of inactivity it went to sleep and then couldn't wake up.

How to enter BIOS on XPS 15?

I spent an hour with just the Dell logo on the screen going no further. A few further restarts brought up the pre boot systems performance check, this found no hardware issues and on the third time gave a message of 'No bootable devices were found!

Copying over, what I already said before on the other article, glad it was mentioned and also reported to Dell, I did the same. On my with 1. It wasnt like this before 1. Anything, which activates the dGPU, even if it just for a brief moment like doing a 1-second poll like GPUz, or even Windows Task managerregardless of its temps, activates the fans now for seconds.

Opening Steam, fans run for 10 seconds, go off. Even better: If I have Steam running in the back, or anything which can poll the dGPU, then go modern standby, wake up, it triggers the fans every single time for 10 seconds. Opening HwInfo Opening Nvidia panel Closing it This just happens on AC, not battery it seems. Same as opening Windows Explorer for the first time, then right click on an exe file mostly because of the Nvidia dll for the context menu.

Opening Task manager or other apps who access dGPU. Fans go on for seconds Closing Task Manager. Fans go on for seconds. I reverted back to 1.

Flashed back to 1. This also means btw, the laptops fans now kick in always you turn it on, this wasnt the case before 1. They also mostly spin if it wakes up from modern standby and a dGPU poll app is open, like Steam. The fans need to be turned on JUST temperature related, not something bogus reason like an activation.

And how about the color saturation on 4K screens?

Did not upgrade yet, but read a lot of comments stating that colors where oversaturated after upgrading from 1. It is not really "broken" but the problem is, that the option for color accuracy is missing and therefore not enabled per default anymore in the Intel GPU settings.Log in or Sign up.

I'll receive my new XPS 15 soon. I plan to do a full disk images of the system at various points during my setup and installation of software, etc. Many laptops I've worked on were not configured to allow booting from CD. Is it F8, or something else? You press F2 when the Dell logo appears. I believe every laptop with an optical drive has the option to boot from the optical drive as opposed to the hdd, but to change boot order you press F8 at the Dell logo.

F2 is to enter the BIOS. To interrupt normal boot sequence, hit F You can also change the default boot order in BIOS.

Dell XPS 15 Advanced Set Up 9560 or 9570 Windows 10

I was pretty certain its F8, if not you could just restart and try F12 or vice versa. I don't want to have to restart. I want to take an image before the laptop has every booted from the HDD. That's the whole point. That's the reason I want to know how to boot from CD or enter BIOS to enable that, before the system has even been turned on and booted for the first time.

So, thanks, but "I was pretty certain" isn't good enough. I just wasn't sure what he meant by "To interrupt normal boot sequence, hit F12", if that allows the selection of booting from CD if it hasn't been previously enabled in BIOS.

If you want to be sure, change the order in the BIOS, then verify that it's correct before letting it boot. Remove the battery and run on AC. Power up and immediately start pressing F2 a couple times per second. Eventually you'll get into the BIOS. Make your changes to the boot order, moving the DVD drive to the top of the list, then save them.

If it's crucial you never start the factory installation until you've created your image and you really want to be sure you made the change and it "took", pull the power cord before exiting the BIOS screens to shut down the computer. Plug the power back in, power up, and start pressing F2 again so you can verify your boot order change is really there. Now it should boot to the DVD drive.

I understand you wanting to do this, I believe in "backup early and often" myself, and you haven't said what you want this image for, but you may not find it that helpful. What I see folks doing is starting the factory install and letting it activate, creating the restore DVDs using the Dell utility which they'll likely never use then removing Dell shovelware and installing the latest drivers and Windows updates. That would be a good point to take a picture.

Others just blow away the Dell installation, install Windows from scratch, update, then take the picture. I actually pulled the original disk and put it away and installed an SSD in its place, thinking that at some point the original install would be needed. I've never touched that, nor the recovery disks that I made. Great idea about cutting the AC! I hadn't thought of that. Yes, this first image will certainly not be the only one.

I will image at many points during my config and installation of applications. Sure, I may never need the first image, but it costs nothing to do it so why not. Go to Solution. View solution in original post. We have 2 XPS 15they both do it. I have a belkin docking station connected over usb3. My mouse pointer also freezes togethere with the keyboard inputs. It does not happen when connecting the mouse directly to the laptop.

I have also installed Hackintosh and everything works well in Hackintosh, so I suspect Windows may have some problem in communicating with thunderbolt or bios and thus causes the problem. Give it a try and hope you can solve the annoying problem. I am also having the issue with sticking keys on the usb and bluetooth keyboards.

I have XPS 15 I have updated firmware on both laptop and docking station. I have tried multiple usb ports and replaced the docking station. The issue still persists. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also had this issue and on the advice of another forum member I disabled C-State control in the BIOS today this controls the processor going into various power saving states when it is idle. This is different to speed step which alters the speed when the processor is in use.

Seems to have done the trick for me but I suggest you do your own research. From my limitied understanding it will likely use more power and may increase temperature a bit, but so far all good for me and no keyboard repeats. Obviously it would be better if Dell or their partners could fix whatever is causing the issue in the first place. Browse Community. Turn on suggestions. It should now be possible to change between the intel and nvidia cards by typing optimus-manager --switch nvidia or optimus-manager --switch intel.

One solution [7] to the problem described above is to manually unload the nvidia module when not in use, which can be done as follows:.

Make sure that bbswitch is uninstalled or at least disabled. Create the two following files to disable them:.

Now, add nvidia and ipmi in the modprobe. Otherwise, on next boot nvidia will be loaded together with ipmi modules even if blacklisted with install command and it won't be possible to unload them then. Another possible way of shutting off the secondary GPU is to use a patched version of bumblebee that automatically unloads the nvidia kernel module when the card is not in use [9].

This patch has already been merged into the development branch of bumblebee [10] which can be obtained via bumblebee-git AUR. It is also provided by bumblebee-forceunload AURwhich is a modified version of bumblebee with this patch applied. Make sure that AlwaysUnloadKernelDriver is set to true in the driver-nvidia section of your bumblebee configuration:. While the above option unloads the nvidia kernel module when not in use, Xorg will still automatically discover the secondary graphics card and attempt to enable it.

However, this would lead to Xorg unable to detect the default integrated graphics card. The intel graphics card needs to be manually added to Xorg.
